The company was originally established with the trading name Dawkins Builders and by
todays current Managing Director’s father Mr William Dawkins who set up as a sole trader in 1976. The company set out originally as a small building contractor working throughout London and the South East on residential and commercial renovations, extensions and new build projects.
In the early years the company diversified from general buildings which was still at their
core into several areas during Williams ownership, not least UPVC glazing when it was first
introduced mainstream and also underpinning of subsiding buildings for various insurance
companies.

It was this latter specialist area of underpinning which lead William somewhat naturally into
the drainage industry as the two areas of work often came hand in hand.
This was the company’s original true foundation which it has built on until today.
Dawkins Construction T/A Dawkins Drains as the company was to become known was taken
over by the company’s current Managing Director John Dawkins, again as a sole trader in
1997 at the age of 17 with William taking a back seat and retiring in his early sixties.
Dawkins Drains grew from humble beginnings to become a well-recognised and respected
specialist contractor with a client base of thousands and worked on some of the most
prestigious contracts in the country and for some of the biggest and best names in the
business.
As the underpinning had lead the company into the drainage industry the drainage industry
over the next 10 years would lead the company into the groundworks industry.
Again starting from humble beginnings the groundworks division grew until the point before
the turn of the century that it was an equal commercial interest with the drainage and
construction divisions.
Due to the downturn post 2008 and the subsequent lack of new residential building and
subsequent groundworks the company carried on with its various divisions supporting its
client base but concentrated on public sector works predominately carrying out as main
contractors, renovations and extension works to education buildings for local authorities
where there was obvious financial security.
It was actually during this time the company grew two fold year on year for several years
with John Dawkins the Manging Director sensibly following the industry and financial
security which lead the company to come out of the downturn in the strongest possible
position.
In 2010 the company began its expansion by investing several million pounds over the next couple of years renewing all its plant, transport and equipment, it was over this period the company moved to a new HQ and built up on its already core team that strongly remains until today and what is the overwhelming credit to this company and its reason for its success.

After putting the logistical challenge off for several years in 2012 the company because of growth changed naturally and cleanly from a sole trader to a Limited company, J Dawkins
Ltd – T/A Dawkins Group with John Dawkins still as the Managing Director.
During 2012 – 2013 as we had done before Dawkins Group followed the industry demands
and so with the cutbacks in the education funding in the public sector but the residential
sector expanding again we refocussed our groundworks division at the forefront of the
group.
At the end of 2015 it was decided the drainage division would be dropped from the group so
its management within the group could concentrate on the groundworks and civils division
which has grown year on year in the past 5 years or more to become by far the main core of
the group. This was done with a heavy heart as the drainage works is where it all started for
the current owner John Dawkins but he knew the company again needed to move with the
times.
At the beginning of 2016 the company is in the strongest position it has ever been in and is
looking forward to the next 40 years in business.
